Our Favorite Songs, Albums and Musical Moments of 2018

We're celebrating the year with lists, playlists, podcasts and more.

We here at NPR Music are, by nature, a reflective group. So by the time the calendar page turned to December, we had already started thinking about which songs and albums moved, entranced, confused, surprised and delighted us (and even, sometimes, enraged us) the most in the past year. We've spent the past few weeks asking ourselves and each other which records matter and why; it was a long process of voting, discussing and debating —  and, at times, briefly questioning each other's sanity — that led to our lists of the best music of the year. We hope you see some of your favorites on here, and maybe discover something new, too.

Happy listening,
Marissa Lorusso, Sidney Madden and Lyndsey McKenna

P.S.: We’re not done thinking about this year in music. We’ll be sharing more 2018-themed conversations, reflections and lists throughout the month to come.

Best Music Of 2018

  • From lifers to upstarts, from expansive collectives to singular voices, the artists who made the 50 Best Albums Of 2018 span genres and styles.
  • Did your favorite song of 2018 make the cut? Celebrate your favorites and discover new anthems on our list of the 100 Best Songs of 2018.
  • The All Songs Considered team reflected on another year of "holograms, headlines and big human messes"— and the music that brought us together — on their year-end review. And don't miss the show's conclusion, when Bob Boilen, Robin Hilton, Stephen Thompson and Ann Powers each share one song that summed up the year.

  • Take it from us: There is truly nothing like hearing an office full of people yelling: “Wu! Tang! Wu! Tang!” At the Tiny Desk, the group played a high-energy, 20-minute medley of songs from across its iconic catalog.

One More Thing

  • And the Grammy nominees are… (Spoiler: Kendrick Lamar leads the field with eight nominations, and Brandi Carlile’s up for six awards!)
