The Critics Weigh In: Best TV, Movies And Books of 2018

Looking for the perfect last-minute holiday gift? Or just want a great book for yourself? Let the NPR Book Concierge help you find this year's best reads — this year we’ve got more than 300 books, all hand-picked by our esteemed critics and staffers. There are even helpful search tags to help narrow things down — want a fabulous thriller for next month's book club? We've got you covered. Or maybe something for a kid who loves art, sci-fi and fantasy? We've got that too. If you want to see what your favorite NPR hosts loved this year, check out the Staff Picks section for recommendations from Ari Shapiro, Lulu Garcia-Navarro and many more. (Me personally, I think you should read Seanan McGuire's The Girl in the Green Silk Gown, and then you should go pat your car on the hood and say something nice to it.)

There's romance, history, music, cookbooks, and this year we've even added two new tags: The States We're In, for books that say something about life in America, and No Biz Like Show Biz, which has great reads about TV, film and the stage. Block out some time and dive on in!

It's that time again: year-end best-of list season. Happily, NPR's staff critics Bob Mondello (movies), Eric Deggans (television) and the Pop Culture Happy Hour team of Linda Holmes and Glen Weldon have been busy compiling their own top picks from this year on film. Looking for a few good movie and TV recommendations to get through some long, cold winter nights? Or maybe you need just the tiniest bit of prodding to belt out ABBA classics while attractive, well-dressed people — including Cher — cavort in spectacularly choreographed dance routines? Our favorite movies of 2018 and favorite TV shows of 2018 lists praise everything from prestige serials and period dramas to foul-mouthed pubescent animations and superhero battles royale and beyond. (And there's a bonus list — Fresh Air's critics have compiled all their faves, too!) Happy streaming and merry moviegoing, everyone.
