Hear the untold stories from coal country

Carol Guzy for NPR
Embedded is back with stories that dig deep — this time, in America’s coal country.

Donald Trump captivated supporters in Appalachia when he directly addressed coal workers during his campaign, saying coal jobs would make a comeback. Embedded wanted to see how that promise would impact the lives of real people. The team went to Buchanan County, Va., days before the 2016 election and kept going back, for more than a year.

In five new episodes, Embedded: Coal Stories uncovers the stories of people in the midst of the country’s coal industry: a coal-mine operator debating whether to take out massive loans to stay in the game; a 22-year-old ditching college for coal; and other young people who are desperate to make it out of what they see as a region with no future.

We discover that coal jobs are coming back. But is it just because of President Trump, or are there larger forces at work? Listen to new episodes of Embedded, hosted by Kelly McEvers, and find out.
