| We all come into contact with a lot of different chemicals each day through the food we eat, the products we use, the air we breathe, etc. So if you've ever been tempted by a product or diet that claims to "detoxify your system" or rid your body of harmful chemicals, that's totally understandable! After all, "toxins" definitely sound like something you don't want in your body. | The thing is, the world of detoxes and cleanses tends to be big on the promises and not so big on the … well, you know, science. As a dietitian, I almost hate to admit it. But hey, it was all the craze 15 years ago!
Full-body detoxes and cleanses involve eating foods, taking supplements, or using products that will help your body get rid of harmful toxins. Detox regimens also often include fasting, using saunas, doing enemas, taking herbs, and other wellness practices.
Doing a detox certainly may lead you to feel a certain way. You may even shed a few pounds in the short term. However, the truth is there's limited human research to show that detox programs are effective. Nor is there conclusive evidence that we need to detox our systems at all.
That's because, lucky for us, the human body is an incredible machine. Our skin, digestive system, lungs, kidneys, and liver work 'round the clock to keep our bodies protected and safe from potentially harmful toxins.
For example, your liver contains cells called hepatocytes, which filter your blood through a sorting process that determines: - which nutrients should be processed
- what should be stored
- what should be eliminated via stool
- what should go back to your blood
That means the best way to support your body's natural detoxification processes is to make sure to take good care of your organs and support your overall health. Hint, hint: That involves eating more nutrient-dense foods, staying hydrated, getting regular movement, getting enough sleep, and limiting alcohol and added sugars.
