| | Before we dive into today's newsletter, we'd like to take a moment to recognize and thank all military personnel and their families who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. In 2022, there were 16.2 million veterans living in the United States — that's 6.2% of the American population. | In honor of those we celebrate on Memorial Day, we're highlighting what it truly means to be selfless and how to practice selflessness. | | | | Be well, Morgan Mandriota, Newsletter Editor, Healthline | | | | |

| | | Helping others is more than a feel-good activity | Being selfless, or altruistic, means you care more about other people's well-being than your own. You'll go out of your way to ensure someone else is healthy, happy, and safe without expecting anything in return.️ | Some might argue that altruistic behavior helps make the world go round. Without selflessness, it's difficult to imagine communities and civilization existing at all. The sacrifice that people in the military make for other people in the country is one example. Thanks to their willingness to put their bodies and futures on the line, the rest of us are able to live more comfortably and securely in our own lives.️️ | According to the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, 7 out of 100 veterans will have post-traumatic stress disorder at some point in their lives. Studies suggest suicidality, traumatic brain injuries, substance use disorders, and depression are also common among service members.️ | Their selflessness on behalf of our country — and the challenges they face as a result — is the true definition of altruism. We could all take a lesson from them and start helping others more often. Even small altruistic acts can make a big difference in someone's day.️ | So, how can you become more selfless? There are many ways to serve others! Consider incorporating some of these acts into your everyday life whenever you can:️ | - Open the door for someone.
- Pick up litter or trash at a nearby park or beach.
- "Pay it forward" at your local coffee shop or on a drive-thru line.
- Offer to help a friend or family member with a project.
- Volunteer at a soup kitchen, assisted living facility, or animal shelter.
