| Here's a fun fact: Of U.S. adults, roughly 1 in 5 believe they have a food allergy. However, as few as 1 in 10 actually do, according to a 2019 study. So if you suspect that you have one, it may be a good idea to get an in-office test to confirm. (FYI: At-home tests are not recommended by experts.) | If you received a food allergy diagnosis as a child, that's also a good reason to be tested in adulthood. That's because most kids grow out of their food allergies. Below, Jessica Sandoz, a registered dietitian at Healthline, explains more. | | | | Correction: On Tuesday 5/7/24, the Nutrition Edition incorrectly attributed the feature story "How can I stay on top of my diabetes while traveling?" to registered dietitian and Wellos Coach Kirsten Seele. Ginger Wojcik Newsletter Editor, Healthline | | | Written by Ginger Wojcik May 9, 2024 • 3 min read | | | | | | Q: | Can you outgrow a food allergy? | | A: | Children are more likely than adults to outgrow food allergies. In fact, most kids with allergies to eggs, cow's milk, and wheat grow out of them by adulthood. However, only 20% of kids with peanut and tree nut allergies grow out of them.
Food allergy prevention in infancy is crucial. Many pediatricians recommend introducing common allergens as early as 4 to 6 months old. Gradually exposing babies to common allergens can help them build a natural tolerance. Talk with your pediatrician if you feel your child is at a higher risk.
The possibility of developing a limited tolerance to a food allergen is an ongoing topic of research. The FDA recently approved a treatment for food allergies that helps curb allergic reactions in the case of an accidental exposure. The drug works by exposing a person to a small amount of the allergen (for example, about 2.5 peanuts) via an injection.
It's important to be aware that this treatment does not cure the allergy, nor is it to be used in emergency situations. But there's a possibility that it can decrease the severity of a reaction to a small, accidental exposure.
If you've received a diagnosis of a food allergy, especially an anaphylactic reaction, do not try to test your tolerance at home. Consult with your doctor on the best course of action and how to proceed with treatment. | | | Jessica Sandoz, Registered Dietitian | | Want to learn more about food, diets, cooking, or some other nutrition subject?
