There have been many who struggled to fit in the cloistered world of classical music, but Julius Eastman stands tall among them. It's only in recent years that friends and scholars have begun casting a renewed spotlight on the short-lived composer's music. His personal motto, he said in 1976, was "to be what I am to the fullest: Black to the fullest, a musician to the fullest, and a homosexual to the fullest."

The Tenacious Unicorn Ranch, a "trans and queer haven" home to nine residents, has been a cultural flashpoint in its community since relocating to deep red Custer County, Colo., last year. While the owners say the county is full of amazing people, they also say they've been a target of harassment and threats — and have seriously invested in security and self-defense as a result.
