Including a gender identity glossary and profiles from the LGBTQ community

June has seen wins — record support for same-sex marriage, groundbreaking announcements from the world of sports — and a few losses, including a wave of anti-trans legislation. This month NPR has highlighted the experiences of LGBTQ communities — and some ways the country could better support them. Newsletter continues after sponsor message Profiles In Queerness NASA Tam O'Shaughnessy gave the Short Wave podcast an intimate look at her decades-long partnership with Sally Ride, the first American woman to fly in space: how they met and fell in love, the pressures they faced as a queer couple, and their long-awaited and public coming out with Sally's death in 2012. Listen to their story. There have been many who struggled to fit in the cloistered world of classical music, but Julius Eastman stands tall among them. It's only in recent years that friends and scholars have begun casting a renewed spotlight on the short-lived composer's music. His personal motto, he said in 1976, was "to be what I am to the fullest: Black to the fullest, a musician to the fullest, and a homosexual to the fullest." Dan Boyce/CPR The Tenacious Unicorn Ranch, a "trans and queer haven" home to nine residents, has been a cultural flashpoint in its community since relocating to deep red Custer County, Colo., last year. While the owners say the county is full of amazing people, they also say they've been a target of harassment and threats — and have seriously invested in security and self-defense as a result. The 1A show produced deep dives this month on two segments of the LGBTQ community: the growing number of people identifying as bisexual and their struggle for visibility (listen here), and the complicated relationship between queer communities and police, particularly for those with a foot in both worlds (listen here) LGBTQ Guides Kaz Fantone for NPR Issues of equality and acceptance of transgender and nonbinary people — along with challenges to their rights — have become a major topic in the headlines. With a goal of helping people communicate accurately and respectfully with one another, NPR put together a glossary of terms relating to gender identity, including pronouns. There is no national mandate for sex education in the U.S., and even in the states that do provide courses, homosexuality is often disregarded or vilified.
