A love Supreme

Supreme Court Justices Sandra Day O'Connor and William Rehnquist always acknowledged that they had dated during their time together at Stanford Law School, but recently uncovered correspondence shows they had a connection intense enough for Rehnquist to propose marriage.

Drug addiction is a slow-motion disaster for rural areas; this county is managing it like a major emergency

Rural Americans say drug addiction and abuse are the most urgent health problems facing their local community, a new NPR poll finds. Ty Trenary didn't believe it until he was elected sheriff of Snohomish County, Wash., and discovered the county jail had become a de facto detox ward. When a huge landslide struck the region, the rapid, coordinated response gave officials an idea:

Commit that same level of effort and resources to opiates. Now they're running an emergency operations center working across local governments.

The biggest political shift Tuesday may come at the state level

Republicans have dominated many state elections for decades and now hold two-thirds of governor's mansions. But Democrats are leading in three GOP-held states this year — including in Michigan, where Muslim voters' views of President Trump could be critical — and 10 more are too close to call. Races in Florida, Georgia and Kansas have been especially feisty, and Illinois' campaign features two wealthy candidates who have dumped millions into the race.

Reporters from NPR stations across the country explain what to watch for in every gubernatorial race.

Biologists checking out a 10,000-foot-deep chunk of ocean floor accidentally crashed a massive octopus party

It's only the second time an octopus breeding ground like this has been discovered, San Francisco's KQED reports — and with more than a thousand tentacled tenants, this cluster off California is far larger.

“We’ve seen less than 1 percent of the world’s deep ocean bottoms. On any particular dive, you could be shocked by something,” the lead scientist said.

When Billy met Sandy

Sandra Day entered Stanford Law School at 19 as the only woman in her class; 26-year-old Bill Rehnquist, attending Stanford on the GI Bill, became her frequent seatmate. For a while, the future Supreme Court justices even dated regularly. But eventually she broke up with him, he left for Washington, and she began dating her future husband.

Rehnquist wasn't over her, though — a newly revealed letter sent months later includes a marriage proposal.

Bookstores may be fading, but this one got hundreds of volunteers to help them move, bucket-brigade-style

Shoulder to shoulder, community members formed a line 500 feet long: from the stockroom of the old radical bookshop, down the sidewalk and onto the shop floor of the new store. People at bus stops joined in. Passers-by asked what was happening, then joined the chain.

In just one hour, they moved 2,000 books down the block, to a new space purchased with community support.
