| | Welcome to our miniseries about how to prevent and manage psoriasis flare-ups. Over these 3 days, you'll learn valuable information to help you feel better and live your healthiest life.
Today, we'll be focusing on common psoriasis triggers and steps you can take to avoid flares. | Common causes of flare-ups | Psoriasis is an autoimmune condition with no known cure. Symptoms such as itchy, inflamed, or scaly skin may come (during a flare) and go (during remission). You might notice that your flares have patterns. For example, they show up or get worse if you enter a new environment or eat certain foods.
Common flare triggers to look out for include: | | | | | | | | • | skin injuries like bites, burns, scrapes, or scratches | | Psoriasis triggers are unique to each person. It's important to monitor and track your symptoms and where they pop up to understand what causes them to flare. | | Can you prevent flare-ups? | While there's no surefire way to eliminate psoriasis flares, there are many things you can do to try to reduce their frequency and severity. Medication, which we'll talk more about later in the series, is the best way to manage and prevent flares. However, avoiding your triggers and making certain lifestyle changes, like the following, can also have a positive impact: | | | • | Stress reduction: Try exercise, yoga, or relaxation techniques. | | Lean on your support systems | Managing flares can be overwhelming, especially at the start of your journey. It's common to experience body image issues and anxiety symptoms and have trouble navigating social stigma when living with psoriasis.
Remember that you don't have to go through this alone. There's so much support available to you, including education, personal connections, and professional care.
