| When I think of leaky gut, a ramshackle wooden galleon comes to mind, slowly sinking as the ocean creeps in. But it's the opposite. Leaky gut syndrome (LGS) is a proposed medical condition where contents of your gut, including toxins and bacteria, leak into your bloodstream. | However, the science isn't settled on this one. Most experts in the mainstream medical community don't recognize LGS as a legitimate medical condition, but many alternative health practitioners believe it may be the root cause of a bewildering array of health conditions. Let's see if we can plug any gaps in our knowledge. | Before we get into that, here's some background on gut health: | | | | Bon appétit, Tim Snaith Newsletter Editor, Healthline | | | Written by Tim Snaith October 17, 2023 • 3 min read | | | | | | Demystifying leaky gut syndrome | Leaky Gut Syndrome (LGS) is a proposed condition that causes increased intestinal permeability — when microscopic gaps open up in the lining of the intestines, allowing substances to pass into the bloodstream. Some functional medicine practitioners believe LGS contributes to autoimmune diseases, chronic fatigue, migraine, mood issues, and more. | Increased intestinal permeability is a real symptom of gastrointestinal issues, including IBS, Crohn's disease, and celiac disease. It's also been been linked to certain factors such as inadequate nutrition, alcohol consumption, stress, infections, lupus, and diabetes. | However, research hasn't confirmed that increased intestinal permeability causes other health conditions, i.e., the core claim behind LGS. | The bottom line is that optimizing your gastrointestinal health provides real benefits. You can follow these tips to help support overall gut health: | | • | | Eat more fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, fermented foods, and fiber-rich whole grains to nourish good gut bacteria. | | | • | Limit or avoid processed foods, gluten, alcohol, and artificial sweeteners, all of which can disrupt gut flora. | | | | • | Manage chronic stress. Some strategies include yoga, meditation, or other relaxation methods. | | | • | Get enough quality sleep to help balance those microbes. | | Focusing on gut health through diet and lifestyle is wise whether or not leaky gut syndrome is a recognized diagnosis, but if digestive issues persist, speak with your doctor to rule out underlying conditions. | Tell us: Have you heard of leaky gut, or raised the possibility with your doctor? I chose this one because it's all metal and can handle big fruit, small fruit, and awkward medium-sized fruit. It's also dishwasher safe and produces copious amounts of citrus juice without mercy. Plus, it's on offer this week, with around one-third off on Amazon (I bought mine at full price, but you don't have to!). | | Every product we recommend has gone through Healthline's vetting process.
