Pentagon leak suspect arrested; mifepristone at the Supreme Court; long COVID risks

A 21-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of leaking classified military documents that included information about the war in Ukraine. Jack Teixeira, a Massachusetts Air National Guard member, is due to appear in court today. His military service records indicate he was an IT specialist, which would have allowed him access to the records, according to NPR's cybersecurity correspondent Jenna McLaughlin.  🎧 She tells the Up First podcast this morning the Pentagon is now in "full damage control" mode, trying to "reassure allies that the U.S. intelligence community can be trusted with their secrets."  🎧 On Morning Edition, Glen Gerstell, former counsel of the NSA, says it's not unusual for someone young and low-level like Teixeira to have top-secret security clearance. Still, he shouldn't have been able to access anything more than what he needed for his job. Gerstell calls the situation a "huge security failure" that will have to be investigated. Patrick Semansky/AP The Justice Department says it will take its fight to protect access to abortion pills to the Supreme Court. This week, a federal appeals court ruled the drug mifepristone could be used up to seven weeks in pregnancy and couldn't be dispensed by mail. The DOJ wants to restore its availability for up to 10 weeks by mail. 🎧 Doctors say the legal battles have left their patients confused, angry and frustrated. On Up First, NPR’s Selena Simmons-Duffin says "lawyers are trying to make educated guesses" about how to advise clinics, but whether providers continue to provide the drug depends on how much risk doctors are willing to take.  ➡️ At the heart of the debate are arguments over whether the FDA improperly approved the drug in 2000. Luckily, the chances of getting long COVID fall sharply between your first and second infection, according to the latest results of an ongoing survey.  North Korea says it's successfully tested a new type of intercontinental ballistic missile that can be launched more quickly than the ones in its current arsenal.  🎧 NPR's Anthony Kuhn says the new solid-fuel missiles will make it "easier for North Korea to hit its enemies, and harder for its enemies to hit it." On Up First, he says the U.S. is now "under pressure to demonstrate its commitment to defending its ally South Korea."
