This means that eating popcorn (plain, unseasoned) is linked to all the wonderful benefits of eating whole grains, including lowering your risk of diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure. | Drizzling melted butter over popcorn has to be the most common way to enjoy these delightful kernels. But what if you have a health condition that requires you to restrict calories or saturated fat? Well, good news for you: There are other ways to bring flavor to this classic snack, and Kelli McGrane, a registered dietitian at Healthline, is back to tell us all about them. | | | | Snack time! While we don't typically think about opening the spice cabinet after making popcorn, it's your best bet for amping up the flavor of your snack without needing more butter.
Here are three ideas to get you started: - Homemade ranch seasoning with dried dill, dried parsley, onion powder, and a little salt (my favorite)
- Hungarian paprika or chipotle powder and a squeeze of lime for a spicy kick
- Nutritional yeast with salt — a classic vegan go-to that adds a cheesy flavor to your popcorn
After tossing your popcorn in melted butter (you only need a small amount to get the dry ingredients to stick), simply sprinkle the seasonings on top and give the bowl a good shake (a bowl with a lid is ideal to keep all your kernels in one place).
There are also several premade popcorn seasoning products you can buy online or at the grocery store, though some are higher in salt or contain more preservatives than others.
Want to skip the butter altogether but still want your seasonings to stick? You may try creating a healthy dressing by mixing olive oil (which has a medley of wonderful health benefits and is more nutrient-dense than butter) with lime juice, balsamic vinegar, apple cider vinegar, or liquid aminos.
