| How do you take your coffee? I like mine with a dash of cream and just enough stevia to barely sweeten it, but I often wonder about studies I've seen that suggest dairy cancels out the good stuff in coffee. | I decided to dig into the research, and the science surprised me — those splashes of cream and a little sweetness probably don't rob my daily cup of its benefits after all. So, let's savor another brew while we weigh the evidence. | But first, here are some stories you might have missed: | | | | Bon appétit, Tim Snaith Newsletter Editor, Healthline | | | Written by Tim Snaith September 28, 2023 • 3 min read | | | | | | Should you add milk, cream, or sugar to your coffee? | Coffee connoisseurs endlessly debate proper brewing techniques. But adding milk, cream, or sugar stirs an even more passionate argument. Here's a thorough look at how these additions may affect your cup of joe. | Some research suggests that cow's milk blocks coffee's antioxidants from fully fighting free radicals. The culprit may be casein, a milk protein that could bind to the all-important polyphenols (compounds that act like antioxidants), affecting how well they work in your body. However, other studies have found no effect on antioxidant activity, or even enhanced effects. Overall, the evidence remains mixed and limited. | Interestingly, one recent study showed that pairing coffee polyphenols with the amino acid cysteine, which is in milk, boosted their anti-inflammatory properties. One small problem: This was a study of immune cells in a petri dish, so we'll need human trials to confirm this potential perk. | Based on available evidence, adding small amounts of milk or cream appears unlikely to substantially change coffee's nutritional profile. There isn't much research into how dairy alternatives behave with polyphenols (yet), but we have a great article comparing the nutritional profiles of almond, dairy, soy, rice, and coconut milks. | What about sugar? A large 2022 study using data from 171,000 adults found that moderate sugar intake — about 1 teaspoon of sugar per coffee on average — didn't reduce the drink's health benefits. In fact, consuming up to 1.5 sugar-sweetened cups of coffee daily was tied to lower risk of death than avoiding coffee entirely. However, intakes greater than those amounts may be counterproductive. | The takeaway? Focus less on finding the "perfect" coffee formula and more on enjoying your daily cup's perks. Maybe minimize added sugars, but don't overthink small amounts of cream or dairy alternatives. And relish those aromatic sips, however you prefer to brew.
