Guy Bryant never intended to be a father figure. But over the past 12 years, he has housed more than 50 foster kids in his Brooklyn apartment. The kids who've moved out still have their keys to his place, he told StoryCorps. They often return on Sundays for a meal cooked by Bryant.

Feeling surrounded by death and dreading the idea of promoting an album, pop star Mike Posner decided to walk across the United States. The experience ended up changing the way he sees his country and himself.

"I got a call from social workers on a Friday afternoon telling me that there was a little girl who only spoke Spanish, and her name's Julia and that they really needed somewhere for her to stay for the weekend," recalls author and foster mother Gena Thomas. That was the beginning of her journey to help a 5-year-old girl from Honduras reunite with her mother.

Dr. Amir Khalil has led rescue operations and created sanctuaries around the world for 20 years. In April, he embarked on his biggest mission: saving animals from a struggling zoo in the Gaza Strip.
