Since 2008, NPR Music has recorded around 900 (yes, 900!) Tiny Desk concerts. From artistic breakthroughs by up-and-comers to victory laps by industry vets, the Tiny Desk represents everything we here at NPR Music cherish: a chance to witness something exciting from artists across genres. Today, we’ve got two exciting Tiny Desk announcements. First – We’re guessing that out of those 900 performances, there are probably a few you’ve never seen. That’s where Tiny Desk Playlists come in. They’re a new way to uncover the hidden gems next to your favorite sessions. For starters, try Bob Boilen’s playlist of some of his favorite sessions from the early days of Tiny Desk. "Maybe it's the start of something, and maybe it's not” — that's how he described the very first one in 2008. We think he was on to something. Resident Viking Lars Gotrich made a playlist of the wildest Tiny Desk concerts (check it out if you’re in the mood for high kicks, confetti cannons and interpretive dance) and Lianne La Havas — whose performance at Bob Boilen’s desk has been viewed nearly 13 million times — made us a playlist of some of her favorite Tiny Desks, including Mac Miller’s. And now you can be a part of it: If you’ve ever wanted to come see a Tiny Desk concert IRL, we’ve got good news. For four nights the week of October 28, we’re opening Tiny Desk concerts to the public for the first time. We’re calling it Tiny Desk Fest . Each night will feature a performance recorded live at the iconic desk itself and an intimate conversation between that evening’s featured artist and a member of NPR Music’s team. Artists will be a surprise, but let’s just say we mean it when we say we’re going big. Tickets go on sale on Thursday, October 3 at 12 p.m. ET. And if you can’t make it to the Fest in person, no problem! We’ll also be streaming these concerts live each night of the Fest. Follow NPR Music on social media or sign up here to be notified of each evening’s live stream on NPR.org, YouTube and Facebook. Tiny Desk. Big Fest, Marissa Lorusso and Lyndsey McKenna |
