All Songs Considered: The Year In Music 2017

Music and politics have a long history and in 2017, a new chapter in their fraught and complicated relationship burst open. It began on a weekend in January with the Presidential inauguration and the Women's March on Washington, D.C. (and around the globe) that followed. That's when the new resistance movement got its first anthem, courtesy Los Angeles-based singer MILCK and her defiant song, "Quiet." On this edition of the program, Ann Powers and Stephen Thompson join us to look back at the highlights of 2017 in music, from the women's march on Washington to Kendrick Lamar's DAMN. and more.

The 50 Best Albums Of 2017

Consensus wasn't easy in 2017. Maybe that's because the news this year kept us on edge, our eyes and ears pointed in many directions. Maybe it's due to the growth of streaming as the dominant listening platform, one whose rules have not yet fully been written. Whatever the cause, with the exception of our No. 1 album, it felt like there were few pieces of music this year that captured our attention instantly and simultaneously.

Tyler, The Creator: Tiny Desk Concert

Tyler, The Creator's Tiny Desk performance was a first for many reasons. It was the Los Angeles rapper's first time performing at our offices, but moreover, it was the Tiny Desk's first nighttime performance, a special request from Tyler and his team in order to professionally light the "stage" themselves. Members of Tyler's lighting crew came to the office a day before to set it up, eventually bathing him and his band in shades of fuchsia, orange and blue - one for each song - during the early evening show.

Lucy Dacus 'Night Shift' Will Be One Of 2018's Great Songs

The singer says the new track from her upcoming album, Historian, is a breakup song. But like the rest of the record, it's ultimately about hope and how far it can go.

Watch Bon Iver's Justin Vernon Perform At NPR Music's 10th Anniversary

Justin Vernon's career as Bon Iver has perfectly aligned with NPR Music's existence. It was 10 years ago this past summer that For Emma, Forever Ago began to write the project and the myth of its creation into indie-rock legend, making Vernon's own name nearly synonymous with it in the process. The idea of that cabin in the woods and Vernon's wounded, multi-tracked falsetto have since become iconic. Here, Vernon performs an intimate set that features "Heavenly Father" and a cover of Leon Russell's "A Song For You" in celebration of NPR Music's 10th anniversary.
