| Do the longer days make anyone else feel perpetually underslept? It's so hard to get to sleep early when the sun's out so late, but my body still wakes up as soon as it starts getting light. I have yet to find an eye mask that stays on my face through the night. So, alas, I'm a grump till October. And not only am I cranky, but I've also noticed that I'm way hungrier during the daytime. Turns out, there's a reason for this. Below, Leah Maschino, a registered dietitian at Healthline, explains why. | | | | Sweet dreams, Ginger Wojcik Newsletter Editor, Healthline | | | Written by Ginger Wojcik April 30, 2024 • 2.5 min read | | | | | | Q: | Does losing sleep make you hungrier? | | A: | Yes! A quality rest directly affects levels of ghrelin and leptin — two hunger hormones that help control your appetite. Ghrelin is responsible for increasing your appetite, while leptin is responsible for decreasing your appetite. Inadequate sleep durations have been linked with an increase in ghrelin and a decrease in leptin levels — meaning you're hungrier and less full.
With poor sleep can come mood changes, trouble with memory, difficulty thinking clearly and concentrating, and other negative side effects. Many of these can result in inconsistent food choices and have a major effect on lifestyle choices.
Good sleep is crucial for so many reasons and is important to prioritize at every stage of life. Read more about what quality sleep can do for you both mentally and physically here, including tips to improve your nightly routine. | | | Leah Maschino, Registered Dietitian | | Want to learn more about food, diets, cooking, or some other nutrition subject? That being said, there is preliminary research that suggests it may support immune health. And, personally, it definitely seems like taking zinc helps reduce the severity of a cold as long as I start the second I feel symptoms come on and continue with the recommended dosage. | | Every product we recommend has gone through either Healthline's or Optum Store's vetting processes.
