Your favorite Montana-based TikTokers are saying goodbye: The state has become the first to ban TikTok. Gov. Greg Gianforte signed the bill yesterday, and the law will go into effect in January. Kiichiro Sato/AP 🎧 How can a state ban an app? NPR's Bobby Allyn says supporters of the bill compare it to how some states ban gambling sites with a firewall. He tells the Up First podcast that lawmakers are concerned China's government could request American data from Tiktok's parent company, ByteDance, and use it for influence or spying. Lawmakers in Washington have threatened to ban the app nationally unless ByteDance finds an American buyer, but negotiations are at a standstill. Tiktok is expected to claim the ban violates American’s free speech rights. A new court filing shows Jack Teixeira’s superiors had caught him accessing top-secret information months before he leaked classified documents that included government secrets about the war in Ukraine on Discord. He had been admonished twice: he was seen once taking notes at a secure facility and putting them in his pocket and was spotted another time on a computer looking at intelligence information. (via WBUR) 🎧 It's unclear if Teixeira was "disciplined or investigated" before his arrest in April, according to WBUR's Ally Jarmanning. He's been in jail since his arrest and faces 24 years in prison. Jarmanning reports prosecutors want to keep him in jail and say he's a flight risk that could "work with a foreign adversary to flee in exchange for more classified information." His defense attorneys say he has no more information, and the scenario is just speculation. Police have surrounded former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan's home and are threatening to storm it, claiming he was sheltering protesters involved in violent protests last week when paramilitary forces detained him. 🎧 NPR's Diaa Hadid says Khan told her over Zoom that he believes there is a plan to kill him, and there was "no question" of him leaving the country. Khan has been calling for early elections, and Hadid says he'd likely win if they were held. But he's facing corruption charges and would be disqualified from running if found guilty. Hadid, who lives in Islamabad, says this political crisis has "caused the economy to unravel. Inflation is soaring, and millions are going hungry."   On Tuesday, we featured a story in this newsletter about religion in the U.S., reported by Joel Rose. According to psychologist Shefali Tsabary, you need to start with relinquishing control. She teaches "conscious parenting" in her new book, The Parenting Map.  👶 Shame and blame don't work. A parenting model based on fear and punishment prevents your child from bonding with you and feeling secure and valuable.  👶 Make choices that align with your child's needs, not your own metrics of success.
