My first plane ride in this pandemic was to Minneapolis in May of 2020 to cover the protests after the killing of George Floyd. It was only by being there in person that I understood the excessive force by police on those first days of demonstrations: tear gas, rubber bullets, batons — even when demonstrators were peaceful, even when journalists were clearly identified. To see this up close, without the filter of distance, was powerful. Sharing what I witnessed so that others can understand is a responsibility I take seriously as a journalist. Donate Now Since then, I’ve continued to travel to bring stories to our listeners. Stories about civilians in Ukraine; about doctors in the United States navigating a post Roe v. Wade world; conversations about race, about farmers impacted by climate change, and beyond. But also about joy: about music and literature and love. I do this work because I believe that the roles NPR and WUFT 89.1 have at this moment are more important than ever. The roles of truth teller, bridge builder and accountability holder. And, perhaps most of all, the role of cutting through the reams of disinformation that plague our societies. You have an important role to play, too.
