Day 9. Leave your phone alone

Out of sight, out of mind.
Slow Your Scroll Challenge

DAY 9 OF 10

Leave your phone alone

We can't talk about social media usage without talking about our phones. If you're scrolling, chances are you're doing it on your phone.

And since our phones go most places with us — even from room to room — we're pretty much constantly tempted to scroll.

In fact, even when your phone is turned off or put facedown, its presence still may be affecting you. A 2017 study found that participants who kept their phones on their desks had a harder time focusing and performing tasks than participants whose phones were inside their bags or in another room.

If you want to spend less time on social media, spending less time with your phone may be a big help.

Today's challenge: Put distance between you and your phone

Remember that your phone use, like anything else, is a habit — and it's one that you can slowly and gradually change.

Choose one (or more) of the following options:

  • At night, charge your phone in a different room. Need it close by in case someone calls? Use an outlet you can't reach from your bed.
  • Designate a homebase for your phone. Leave it there throughout the day and only pick it up if you leave the house.
  • While you're working, keep your phone in your bag or inside a drawer.
  • Before dinner, have everyone put their phones in a basket while you eat.

Tomorrow is our last day! We'll talk about flexible ways to keep building a healthy relationship with social media.

Until tomorrow,
