When Arlington, Va., musician NEFFY wrote “Wait Up” while sitting on the edge of her bed last year, she had no idea it would be the song that would change her life. Starting next week, the Contest that brought her and six other past winners into the national spotlight, is back.
For seven years, NPR Music’s Tiny Desk Contest has brought together thousands of artists from around the country. The concept is simple: Unsigned bands and musicians are invited to submit a video of themselves performing an original song at a desk of their choice. Meanwhile, NPR assembles a panel of judges made up of NPR Music staff, music journalists and DJs, and Tiny Desk alums to choose one grand prize winner. This year’s judges include Tiny Desk creator Bob Boilen, Tiny Desk producer Bobby Carter, WBGO editorial director Nate Chinen, rapper Big K.R.I.T., Michelle Zauner of Japanese Breakfast, and singers iLe and Raveena.
On top of playing a Tiny Desk concert, this year’s winner will also headline a U.S. tour featuring other standout artists from the Contest, in partnership with NPR Member stations. And since Tiny Desk is as much about lifting up the DIY musician community as it is the one winner, we’ll be featuring some of our other favorite entrants on the radio, NPR Music’s website and social channels, and our Tiny Desk Contest Top Shelf series.
The Contest opens next Tuesday, Feb. 8 and runs through March 14. More details can be found here.
If someone you know is an unsigned musician, share the news and encourage them to enter! And if you yourself are a musician, remember: That song you’re writing on the edge of your bed could change your life.
