NPR's latest show is here! The Limits with Jay Williams. Below, Jay introduces himself and offers a little insight as to the cheat codes and character studies you’ll get out of his podcast.
Hey, NPR—it’s Jay Williams here. If y’all aren’t familiar with me, I’m an NBA commentator, an analyst for ESPN, an entrepreneur and a father, too — but today, I’m also a podcast host. I’d like to invite you to listen to the very first episodes of The Limits with Jay Williams featuring the mastermind behind Lebron James’ empire, Maverick Carter, and a new episode - that drops today - with Charlamagne Tha God.
Let me keep it real with you - it’s not a show about sports at all. It’s not even really a show about me. It’s a podcast about something a little bigger than that. I like to think of the show as a hard look into what it means to define, overcome, and go beyond one’s own limits.
See, I spent so much of my young life feeling limitless. In 2002, I was at the top of my game. I was a big shot in professional basketball - I had signed a $16 million contract with the Chicago Bulls as a rookie - and thought I had the world in my hands. The very next year, I found myself on the wrong side of a motorcycle wreck. Everything changed after that. My health, my relationships, my career prospects—all of it was on the verge of total collapse. After years of re-dos and reinvention, I was able to come out of it all on top.
This show’s about what it takes to make the turnaround. I’m fascinated by it––I want to know how others have had to take a full 180 not just to survive, but to thrive. And I want to share those stories and insights with you. I’ll be talking to inspiring celebrities, luminaries, and power-players - from Gabrielle Union to Desus & Mero - and we’ll discuss the bets they placed on themselves to overcome adversity, and transform their dreams into empires.
Ultimately, this is a show about faith, grit, and seeing past doubt. It’s a show about what it means to make and achieve greatness, even when the odds are against you.
I believe I’ve spent my whole life preparing for this podcast, and I’m proud to finally debut it on NPR. This week, I hope you take the time to listen, to reflect, and to ask yourself: how can I push past my own limits?
