It's May 3, 1971. More than 20,000 people have gathered in Washington, D.C. to protest the Vietnam War. The drone of helicopters, engines and sirens intermixed with the voices of protesters, police officers, veterans and office workers on the streets of Washington, D.C. On the scene? NPR Reporters collecting news in anticipation of the very first broadcast of their very first show: All Things Considered. Our journalists ultimately produced a 24-minute piece that took listeners to the heart of America's agonies over the war in Vietnam. Suffice to say, we didn't stop there. It's been exactly fifty years since our first broadcast. For every day of that half-century, people have relied on the credible reporting and thoughtful analysis they get from NPR. We are here today because people made generous donations to support our work. Your support paid public radio forward so that we can continue serving you. Will you join in paying public radio forward for tomorrow and the next generation? Make a donation to your local NPR station in honor of our anniversary--and what comes next--today. |
