Race, Identity & The Census

Code Switch
Who Counts In 2020?

As the hosts of the Code Switch® podcast point out, race impacts everything— from politics to pop culture, to history and sports. So it is no surprise that it also affects the census. This month, as Americans across the country check the “race” box on their census forms, Code Switch brings us a new series about who we are and what it means to be counted.

Over five episodes, hosts Gene Demby and Shereen Marisol Meraji tackle census-based topics like who would be entitled to reparations, the fears around how certain groups’ information will be used, and the new reality of being white.

Take a closer look at the 2020 census and how we identify as Americans. You can start by listening to the first three episodes in the series here:
  • Episode 1 – “Mother, Should I Trust The Census Bureau?”
  • Episode 2 – “A Treacherous Choice And A Treaty Right”
  • Episode 3 – “When It Comes To Reparations, Who Counts?”
  • Episode 4 – “The New Reality Of Whiteness” (coming April 22)
  • Episode 5 –“Puerto Rico, Island Of Racial Harmony?” (coming April 29)
