On Memorial Day two years ago, George Floyd was murdered by a white police officer in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Protests in the wake of the tragedy denounced American policing and its failure to respect the basic civil rights of people of color. There were calls to abolish the police, defund the police, or reform policing from the ground up. In our new series from Embedded, Changing The Police, we take a hard look at this last idea- reform- and follow how it’s playing out in Yonkers, New York, a city with a long and ugly history of police misconduct. Embedded, in partnership with The Marshall Project, follows the Yonkers Police Department as it looks to institute reform and emerge from years of oversight by the Department of Justice. The series explores whether true, cultural change is even possible in a police department with a history of misconduct. In the first episode, we spend time with Yonkers Police Commissioner, John Mueller, a colorful and charismatic “cop’s cop,” who has promised to change the way the police operate in Yonkers. Catch this episode, and upcoming episodes of Changing The Police, right in your Embedded or wherever you get your podcasts. |
